After gastric bypass surgery your body is no longer able to absorb some key nutrients as it did before the surgery.
Therefore you need to faithfully take your doctor recommended 'after gastric bypass vitamins'. You are at risk of developing certain vitamin deficiencies.
This is a list of the gastric bypass vitamins and mineral supplements I was given.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mandatory (after gastric bypass vitamins)
Multivitamin 1 a day AM
Vitamin B12 1 a day AM
Iron 1 a day (27mg.) PM with C
Vitamin C 1 a day (500mg.) PM with iron
Calcium Citrate with D 1000-1500 mg Divided Doses
Optional (after gastric bypass vitamins)
Zinc 10-20 mg. AM
Stool softener as directed Take with Iron
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Get a good quality Multivitamin with minerals.
At first I took Flinstone Complete children's chewable until I was able to swallow an adult vitamin.
Multivitamins help ensure you are getting enough of all the micronutrients that you need.
Vitamin B12
Can be taken 500 mcg. orally each day or 1000 mcg. by monthly injection.
At first I gave myself the monthly injection but later changed to a sublingual (dissolves under your tongue)
There are different kinds of Vitamin B12. The most common kind is cobalamin. However I came across a variety
called methylcobalamin. The brand I take is made by M R M (metrabolic response modifiers) . It works great as far as I feel it gives me a real energy boost.
Vitamin B12 helps with blood cell and nerve function as well as digestion and food absorption. And protein
synthesis. Deficiency may cause certain types of anemia.
Iron 27-28 mg. of elemental iron daily. (If your multivitamin meets this requirement , no additional iron is normally
needed.
Iron is vital in the formation of red blood cells that provide oxygen to your body.
Take at least 1 hour before or after calcium .
Vitamin C
Any capsule, liquid or chewable form.
Vitamin C has a role in the body's calcium levels and bone formation. It also promotes wound healing and iron absorption.
Calcium Citrate with D
1000-1500 mg. daily Calcium is best absorbed in doses of 500-600 mg. at a time. Take with meals.
Calcium citrate is more easliy absorbed then the more common form, calcium caronate.
Calcium helps maintain strong bones. Helps the heart pump correctly. and aids in soft tissue repair.
Take calcium at least 1-2 hours before or after iron.
Gastric bypass vitamins can also include Zinc
10- 20 mg. daily However most multivitamins already have the required amount of zinc.
Zinc helps support the immune system and also helps wound healing. Hair loss may represent a zinc deficeiney.
Consult your doctor if you are having problems.
Do not take more than 40 mg of zinc because too much may interfere with the absorption of other nutrients.
Stool Softeners
Constipation can sometimes be a problem. Daily stool softeners may help manage the problem.

Gastric Bypass Vitamins are just mandatory vitamins you need to take after surgery to insure your well being.
Gastric bypass surgery is combination of malabsorptive and restrictive procedures. This type of surgery makes it difficult for your body to get the proper amount of vitamins and minerals it needs to function properly.
When you don't take these "gastric bypass vitamins" as prescribed by your doctor you may very easily become ill.
Complications can arise. Take your vitamin supplementation seriously. They are very important to your recovery and continued good health!
